NG Guide Chat Moderation

Posted by NGReviewEater - June 1st, 2010

Basic FAQ:

Q: How do I become a mod in this chat?
A: First of all, do not ask to be a mod. Secondly, chat appropriately and be like a role model. Third, point out abuse to the current moderators in case we're not on and you may become a mod yourself. Finally, in the event the chat is being invaded by trolls and spammers, the current nominators may nominate you to be a mod to fight off the spammers and trolls. If you are "in the other side of the world" (as in when it's 11 PM here it's around 10 AM - 3 PM in your area) you may be nominated quickly in order to try and keep a mod possibly online during the nighttime of NG.

Q: Why is it that I lose my power to moderate the chat after refreshing?
A: As a safety precaution, to prevent mods from nominating someone who isn't suited for the job (due to personal opinion or bias) and causing abuse, the chat will strip off your mod status after refreshing the screen. You will remain to be a mod as long as you don't refresh the screen and maintain an internet connection. However, you can be demodded by a permanent moderator if there is no need for extra moderation.

Q: I can demod a permanent moderator?
A: Yes you can, and it also kicks the mod out of the chatroom. But the moderator can simply refresh the chat, get back in, and kick your ass, so don't try doing that. An offense like that will lead to a ban, and consider your chances of being a mod zero. Only the broadcaster (me) can permanently demod or nominate people as permanent mods. If you ban a permanent mod without good reasoning then you will be permanently banned from chatting again.

Moderator Rules:

- Do NOT demod other moderators unless they go completely berserk/abusive. This will lead you to be demodded and a ban.
- Do not randomly delete text or enable/disable chat features. Only use or disable features accor
- Respect users as if you are one; just because you are a mod doesn't mean you're better than a user
- Follow the user chatting rules listed above. Just because you're a mod doesn't mean you can break the rules.

Moderator Guidelines:

- Remove abuse that breaks the rules
- Do not delete comments you do not agree with or if it's by a certain user you dislike/hate
- If you're not sure if you have to moderate something, DON'T MODERATE IT. I would rather see users have fun than have something borderline be removed and possibly ruining the entertainment.
- Do NOT nominate other users as mods unless the chat is being invaded by trolls and you need assistance
* Only nominate those who you think will not abuse the power, and make sure to demod them when the situation has calmed down
- Use the time-out feature if a user has SEVERELY broke the rules. If it's a minor infraction only remove the text
- Use the kick feature if the user has repeatedly broke the rules.
- Use the ban feature if a user has been a huge nuisance and the chat is better without him/her (NOTE: Ban is IP-based, so the user cannot evade it with another account.)
- Always leave links enabled unless users begin carelessly linking to material
- Do not use slow mode unless the chat becomes extremely busy with so many people, and/or users rapidly chat quickly
- Try to participate with the users in the chat instead of staring at the chat and removing abuse like a robot
